Courtesy Circle Meeting:
The 10th of March
[Being an edited transcript of that event.]
The Lecture Hall: a place for gathering many people for
presentations or group discussions.
Punzel curtsies quietly.
Punzel smiles at Drusilla.
Drusilla smiles at Punzel.
Punzel sits down on a simple table.
Drusilla smiles sunnily, "Good day, sera."
Punzel asks Drusilla, "How are you, sera?"
Drusilla nods to Punzel, "I am well, and you?"
Punzel nods slowly, "I am ... keeping much to my room and the
shrine of late, sera. Attempting to find my path."
Drusilla nods understandingly to Punzel.
Drusilla says to Punzel, "I truly hope you will find yours, as I
have mine."
Drusilla smiles.
Punzel nods pensively, "I think we are ever in the process of
finding our paths. Every day."
Drusilla nods to Punzel, "Oh, indeed."
Drusilla tells Punzel, "I and sera Myrth will be attempting to
open a small library, or rather a collection of books, for the
Outer Baily."
Watchman Gareth arrives through the west door.
Watchman Gareth bows quietly.
Drusilla smiles at Watchman Gareth.
Punzel nods respectfully to Watchman Gareth, "Good day,
Watchman."
Watchman Gareth smiles, "Gramercy, and well met, good
damosels."
Drusilla nods respectfully to Watchman Gareth.
Drusilla smiles sunnily.
Watchman Gareth sits down on a wooden seat.
Drusilla says to Punzel, "I was hoping that you would help in
making a book on courtesy."
Punzel nods pensively to Drusilla, "I would be willing to help with
that, sera. I would need more information about what you require."
Drusilla nods to Punzel.
Drusilla says to Punzel, "Simply said, it will be a book
containing the guidelines created by the Courtesy Circle."
Punzel asks quietly, "Have either of you brought issues of
courtesy you were hoping to discuss today? We seem to be a
small group this week."
Watchman Gareth smiles.
Drusilla says, "I am thinking many might find it useful,
especially newly awakened."
Punzel nods slowly to Drusilla, "Aye. I hope so. I ... I hope so."
Drusilla nods.
Punzel distractedly strokes her emerald green brocade overdress.
Watchman Gareth says, "I have questions, mostly regarding
etiquette of martial nature and bent."
Punzel nods to Watchman Gareth, "Please, ask. Let us see if we
three can arrive at any useful thoughts."
Watchman Gareth says, "I have wondered about both the courtesy
-- and legality -- of unsanctioned duels. For I was recently
involved with one called for by an Honored Guest."
Punzel nods slowly, "We have discussed that much here, in
actuality."
Punzel tells Watchman Gareth quietly, "Armsman Philo has told me
that unsanctioned duels are not illegal ... that they are merely unfavored
by the court, and can result in the court's displeasure ..."
Kyle arrives through the west door.
Watchman Gareth nods.
Myrth arrives through the west door.
Watchman Gareth rubs his square jaw thoughtfully.
Kyle smiles.
Punzel admits, "And I see no difference between sanctioned duels
and unsanctioned duels in courtesy. Sanction is a separate issue."
Myrth curtsies apologetically, "Sorry for being late.."
Kyle sits down on a wooden seat.
Drusilla smiles brightly at Myrth.
Punzel asks Watchman Gareth, "Did you have more specific
questions or thoughts?"
Thayil arrives through the west door.
Ravelyn arrives through the west door.
Ravelyn curtsies arduously.
Thayil bows.
Kyle smiles at Ravelyn.
Kyle smiles at Thayil.
Ravelyn strides to the south wall.
Ravelyn leans against the south wall.
Punzel nods politely.
Thayil says, "does anyone have a book i may read"
Watchman Gareth says, "In sooth, I was wondering whether when
faced with a great and present discourtesy, whether it was better to
have the matter pass, or to deal with it presently, for the ser who did
disgrace was likely never to show up for a formal challenge."
Punzel nods slowly to Watchman Gareth.
Punzel ponders.
Drusilla sits down next to Myrth.
Punzel admits, "If one does not seek favor with Her Majesty's Court,
then one needn't concern themselves with sanction for dueling ..."
Myrth sits down next to Drusilla.
Punzel slowly shakes her head, "Courtesy is a separate issue. One
can still name seconds, and behave courteously, without sanction ..."
Myrth nods.
Watchman Gareth ponders quietly.
Watchman Gareth nods.
Drusilla nods.
Watchman Gareth says, "Grammercy."
Punzel explains quietly, "Sanction is more an issue of attaining
favor with Her Majesty's Court, and not an issue of courtesy, I
think. And so it is not discourteous to press for such a duel."
Punzel blushes slightly, "But such is only my own impression and
opinion."
Kyle nods to Punzel, "I disagree"
Punzel glances at Kyle.
Punzel gestures to Kyle, "State your opinion, then, ser, and let
us discuss."
Kyle smiles friendily at Punzel.
Drusilla nods to Myrth.
You hear a knock from the other side of the west door.
The west door is already open.
Kyle tells Punzel, "I just think differently, I think people have
a right to go and spar on the topic without a porblem being
made public"
Punzel frowns confusedly.
Punzel listens quietly.
Cassandra arrives through the west door.
Cassandra curtsies politely.
Cassandra sits down on a wooden seat.
Watchman Gareth smiles at Cassandra.
Kyle smiles at Cassandra.
Punzel listens confusedly to Kyle.
Kyle nods, "thats it, I think prvacy is an ishue and that
sanction has nothing to do with favor"
Punzel smiles slightly.
Watchman Gareth raises his straight eyebrow.
Punzel suggests to Kyle, "You may want to ask the Lord
Chamberlain about that, ser."
Kyle shrugs, "to each his own"
Myrth smiles warmly.
Punzel assures Kyle quietly, "Unsanctioned duels do indeed lose
favor with the Inner Bailey, whether one likes it or not."
Cassandra says softly, "Pardon me for being late."
Watchman Gareth nods to Kyle thoughtfully.
Myrth smiles warmly at Cassandra.
Kyle blinks confusedly.
Myrth murmurs to Cassandra, "I was too.. just a moment ago."
Watchman Gareth raises his hand tentatively.
Punzel nods to Watchman Gareth, "Yes, Watchman?"
Cassandra smiles at Myrth.
Drusilla smiles at Cassandra.
Watchman Gareth asks, "What if one wanted to start a quest of
-- many challenges? -- an open declaration to seek a duel with
all who bore arms in the Outer Bailey... should each be called
separate, or can they be declared as a single challenge?"
Drusilla nods.
Cassandra raises her arched eyebrow slightly.
Punzel admits, "I know not. I know not why anyone honorable would
seek to do such a thing ..."
Watchman Gareth smiles, "For that is a quest that I am issuing
-- the Quest of the Chivalrous Heart."
Punzel ponders.
Myrth raises her arched eyebrow.
Cassandra raises her hand.
Kyle blinks at Watchman Gareth.
Myrth glances at Watchman Gareth.
Punzel nods to Watchman Gareth, "I would advise you to seek the
opinion of the Lord Chamberlain, ser, who is a knight. He would
know more than I on such matters."
Punzel nods to Cassandra, "Yes, sera?"
Cassandra says hesitantly, "I do not know much of duels and
such....however"
Cassandra continues, "Perhaps such a challenge as the Watchman
spoke of could become a sort of Tournament?"
Kyle moves from a wooden seat to Cassandra.
Watchman Gareth smiles at Cassandra.
Myrth tilts her head thoughtfully.
Myrth smiles at Cassandra.
Watchman Gareth turns to Punzel, "Might I address that?"
Punzel nods slowly, "Mayhap. But ... to extend a general challenge
to all ... with no purpose but to serve some personal needs ..."
Punzel nods to Watchman Gareth, "Of course, Watchman."
Cassandra stares blankly at Kyle.
Ravelyn listens to Watchman Gareth.
Watchman Gareth explains, "The quest that I have in mind is one which
I have already spoken to the Lord Chamberlain about. He indeed felt it
worthy of further attention. And yet, that we have no tourney field, we
shall have to make do rather with a pas de armes -- indivdual bouts."
Kyle bows humbly.
Kyle leaves through the west door.
Punzel nods slowly, "And so you will issue challenges to all who bear
arms, for light matter, and therefore bring dishonor on those who do not
duel for such reasons as fun, and hold their swords for honor only, and
defense of the innocent? I ... I am not certain how I feel. But ... this is not
a question of courtesy, my opinions. They are merely my own feelings."
Watchman Gareth explains, "The Quest is not for idle or unmeritorious
reason -- but might indeed be germaine to this circle, for I would that it
might meet with all's pleasure, if thou woulds't hear of my intent in its proposal."
Cassandra frowns.
Punzel nods, "I would be willing to hear more."
Watchman Gareth bows to Punzel deeply.
Watchman Gareth stands up on the floor.
Watchman Gareth turns to Punzel, Cassandra, Myrth, Drusilla,
Ravelyn and you.
Punzel glances concernedly at Watchman Gareth, "I am sorry if I
spoke sharply, Watchman. I am willing to hear more, and make a
more infomred opinion."
Cassandra says, "Why cannot a duel be issued as a friendly
contest of strength and skill?"
Punzel explains to Cassandra, "I do not draw blood for friendly
contests."
Watchman Gareth bows to Punzel, "The fault might be mine, sera,
for I did indeed surprise many with this proposal."
Punzel says, "I only draw blood for honor or defense of the innocent."
Punzel admits, "And even then, it is difficult. It is a serious matter."
Punzel apologetically shakes her head, "But the opinions I am
stating are personal, and not related to guild business. I
apologize. The Watchman and I should talk more privaetely at
another time."
Watchman Gareth says, "It came to mind that there were many
challenges of late for reasons personal -- often begrudgements
of sorts, or faults or flaws in our mortal humanity..."
Punzel listens quietly to Watchman Gareth.
Watchman Gareth says, "For that I am mortal myself, and guilty
of many discourtesies, I needs must oft beg forgiveness. And
gramercy, it is oft granted to me."
Watchman Gareth blushes quietly.
Punzel nods confusedly.
Myrth smiles at Drusilla.
Punzel interrupts apologetically, "I fear I must go at the fifth
bell. If there is Courtesy Circle business, we should conduct it."
Watchman Gareth says, "And so, I recalled that in former time
and place, there are oft stories told of deeds done of arms, not for
recourse to salve a spite, but to do worthy deeds to honor thy
opponent, and to win worship of others in noble pass at arms."
Punzel tiredly rubs her forehead.
Cassandra nods agreeingly to Watchman Gareth.
Thayil says, "do you have a book i may read"
Cassandra glances sharply at Thayil.
Drusilla raises her hand.
Punzel nods wearily to Drusilla, "Yes, sera?"
Watchman Gareth says, "And so, I had proposed to the Lord
Chamberlain that there might be a way to have duels for no
other purpose than to win the honor and respect of one's
opponents, and to seek to enoble all in the --"
Punzel raises her hands, "Please. Folk. Please. Such chaos."
Drusilla asks Punzel, "Were we not supposed to discuss meeting
etiquette this meeting?"
Watchman Gareth says, "-- pursuit of a quest, of a more civil,
courteous and chivalrous manner."
Cassandra says to Thayil, "This is a meeting ser"
Punzel tells Thayil, "Ser, this is a meeting of a guild."
Punzel stands up on the floor.
Thayil says, "well, i just wanted to know if anyone has a book
i may borrow"
Punzel asks Drusilla quietly, "Sera, would you be willing to lead
the meeting?"
Watchman Gareth glances at Punzel.
Drusilla shakes her head.
Thayil says, "may i please borrow one , i can't read"
Drusilla says to Punzel, "You said that someone else were to lead
this meeting, sera."
Punzel nods slowly, "Then I am afraid I must call the meeting to
an end. I apologize, everyone. This ... my balance is not ... I
cannot do this."
Drusilla says, "I have not done any research."
Myrth glances concernedly at Punzel.
Drusilla glances concernedly at Punzel.
Punzel curtsies apologetically to the lecture hall, "If you will
all excuse me. I offer my most sincere apologies."
Cassandra moves from a wooden seat to Watchman Gareth.
Myrth nods to Punzel.
Punzel begins to move west.
